Let us entertain your party with a one-hour fun and arty presentation.

iPad Art Demo + Documentary Screening

Artist Anthony Montanino and film maker Catherine O’Brien use their talents, a screen and a projector to offer a free entertaining one-hour program for your gathering.
The Presentation:

Montanino, a well-known Sacramento artist, will spend 30 minutes demonstrating his technique of painting with his fingers on his iPad using the Brushes app.

O’Brien, an award-winning documentarian, will then screen “It All Started With Mom”, her funny and touching 24 minute film featuring Montanino’s iPad animations.

The Film:

The agony and ecstasy of dating is examined through the perspectives of six women in the filmmaker’s family. With an age range of 70 years, their experiences are as varied – and amusing – as they are. iPad animations illustrate to the humor.

The Presenters:

Anthony Montanino is life-long long award-winning painter whose landscapes depict a strong sense of place and figuratives a strong sense of character. His works are in many important domestic and international collections, including celebrities Madonna and Arnold Schwarzenegger. He paints nearly every day either in the field or in his Sacramento studio. In addition to oil and water color Anthony discovered digital painting in 2010 with the release if the first iPad and teaches iPainting at the Crocker Art Museum. He had a solo exhibit at UUSS in 2016.

Catherine O'Brien retired as Director of Stanford University’s television and production studio where she produced countless videos including Stanford’s NCAA commercials. She began her television career in 1976 as co-host of an evening magazine on KVIE, Sacramento’s PBS station and founded Presto!Productions. Her personal documentary about dating, It All Started With Mom, was featured on PBS stations and in various film festivals.

Time's a wastin' and memories are fading. Get going now on researching and writing up your family tree. Bring your laptop or tablet to the UUSS Library, 1-4PM, where we'll login to Wifi, then to Ancestry.com to take advantage of their 15-day free trial membership. Tiffany Urness will guide you as you enter facts of births, deaths, and marriages, and show you how to add clippings, photos and stories. Now the fun begins. Instantly, a host of green leaf "flags" will appear, indicating that other subscribers and relations you may not even know have some of the same people on their trees. You may review and adopt this new information, or not.

Participants must cancel within the 15-day trial period so as not to be charged Ancestry subscription fees, BUT, here is a little known tip: After cancellation, you will continue to have access to your tree and all your entries and be able to add and revise, indefinitely!

Facilitated Book Study of "Ghettoside" by Jill Leovy
Invalid Image LinkInvalid Image Link
Jill Leovy's narrative journal, "Ghettoside: A True Story of Murder in America" discusses the black on black violence in South Los Angeles where murder has been referred to as "The Monster." When the criminal justice system fails to respond to violent injury and death, homicide becomes endemic and results in a grave mistrust of the police and the justice system. Leovy, a writer for the LA Times, writes about the pain, trauma, and despair that drive the victims, their families, and friends to get guns and take care of things themselves. The people in her narrative, from killers and victims, to hookers, drug addicts, and good and bad cops, are all written about in the detailed social context of these communities.
I will facilitate a book study providing materials for outlining this narrative, writing character sketches, and delving into its many themes for discussion and sharing. Three sessions, May 20 at 3 to 4 p.m. Orientation and Materials. June 3, and June 24, from 3 to 5 at my house, 415 Anchor Lane #104, West Sacramento, CA 95605, 916-947-1771. David Sedaris at the Mondavi Center for the Arts, UC Davis, Wednesday, May 9, 2018, 8:00 p.m. 2 tickets (Grand Tier Left, Seats D7 and D8, plus 1 parking pass)

With sardonic wit and incisive social critiques, David Sedaris has become one of America’s pre-eminent humor writers. The great skill with which he slices through cultural euphemisms and political correctness proves that Sedaris is a master of satire and one of the most observant writers addressing the human condition today. Sedaris’ new book is a collection of his diaries, entitled Theft By Finding: Diaries (1977-2002). His next book will be David Sedaris Diaries: A Visual Compendium.
