Choose the Hymns for a Sunday service at UUSS
Invalid Image LinkSold
Invalid Image Link
Choose three hymns for us all to sing at Rev. Roger's service on May 22!

Take your pick from hymnals & song books (1958, '63, '93, or 2000). If it's tricky, Keith can help us learn it. If you're daring, you can sing it solo or lead the singing.

If you choose them by April 23, Roger may even change his sermon topic. If you can't make it May 22, you can choose one hymn for each of three upcoming services.

Second highest bidder can choose hymns for one of Roger's summer services!

Gumbo To Your Hombo - and More!
Invalid Image LinkSold
Invalid Image Link
I will bring a pot of authentic, New Orleans gumbo to your home on a mutually agreeable day. According to last year’s gumbo winner, and UUSS member, Ron Selge : "5 Stars! That California boy must have some Cajun in his blood, 'cause his gumbo is gooooood!"

It starts with a red brick roux. From there, I layer the flavors. First, the holy trinity of Cajun cooking. Then the homemade shrimp stock, made with head-on shrimp, 'cause the brains is where the goodness is. Then the herbs and spices, Andouille sausage and them shrimps. It's got a kick, but not so spicy to disrupt the deep, deep flavors. Pour it over your rice and OOOOEEEEEE, you'll be on the bayou.

Also included are a salad and a delicious loaf of French bread. A hearty meal for 6 (or a meal for less with lots of yummy leftovers.)

Birding at Point Reyes
Invalid Image LinkSold

Point Reyes National Seashore is one of the premier birding locations in the country. Besides excellent habitat for land birds, open water birds, and shore birds, its location jutting into the Pacific Ocean can result in unusual pelagic birds or vagrants showing up, not to mention providing a cool respite from Sacramento’s hot summer.

Cathy George, Rich Howard, and Mary Howard will transport fellow bird lovers to this birding hot spot, provide snacks and drinks for the ride, offer field guides and expertise to help with identification, and bring spotting scopes for closer looks.

An optional no-host lunch (not included in the price of the auction item) will follow at the Station House in Point Reyes Station. Moderate walking (< 5 miles). We should be back by 5:00 pm.

2 Lessons - Learning to Improvise on Piano Lessons
Invalid Image LinkSold
Invalid Image Link
About 20 years ago I had a friend show me quickly how to make chords on a piano and improvise around them. Since then I've been fooling people who hear me play thinking that I took piano lessons. I can look up basic chords to most songs and in minutes play a good sounding version of it. I've taught a dozen other people over the years and they're always shocked at how easy it is to learn. I'm NOT going to teach you to read sheet music but instead how to improvise around chords (no previous experience needed at all.)

Sample of me playing in this style: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tQp4q4ruIaA

We can do the two lessons at UUSS on the piano - after service or during the week sometime. Two lessons will be all you need to learn this style and practice and play on your own!

Slope and Intercept wine - 2 bottles Paso Robles Red (2013: 63% Zinfandel and 37% Syrah) and 1 bottle Paso Robles White (2014: 56% Viognier and 44% Grenache Blanc)

Paso Robles winemaker Jason Joyce* has recently released wine under his new private label, Slope and Intercept. Jason has been making wine in Paso Robles since 2007, becoming head winemaker at Calcareous Vineyard in 2010.

Slope and Intercept began as a way for Jason to explore new approaches to making wine, outside of the structure of an existing winery. Due to the small size of each lot, Jason says, “I can take risks to satisfy my winemaking curiosities without having to consider any existing expectations.” Jason also appreciates the freedom of making wines based on what is available each harvest from his favorite vineyards.

Slope and Intercept has already received positive feedback, receiving a 90-point score from Wine Spectator for its 2014 Paso Robles White. Wine Spectator says of the Paso Robles White, “The peach, pear and melon flavors are pure, juicy and ripe, with plenty of refreshing acidity and subtle lemon thyme, citrus zest and floral notes that echo on the finish.”

Slope and Intercept wines are available at www.slopeandintercept.com, and range in price from $28 - $36.
